TikTok Made Me Buy It | Health Products on TikTok

Since retail therapy and running are still cheaper than an actual therapist, this pandemic has led me into purchasing things I never thought I needed, and some have turned into things I cannot live without. Many of these impulse buys were influenced by my time on TikTok, watching influencers unbox from their latest shopping sprees. If you’ve found yourself in a similar position this past year, wondering as a runner whether a certain product endorsed on social media is worth buying, I rounded up some of the things that I bought so you know where to spend your money and where to save it. While these won’t guarantee a new PR, they might help you tackle this new year with a little more energy and confidence—and those can’t hurt.

Things I love

Simple Modern Classic Insulated Tumbler

Simple Modern Classic Insulated Tumbler
Simple Modern
amazon.com

$22.99

I was already sold on the Simple Modern after I saw people raving about its sleek design and insulation capable of keeping drinks cold all day. But it far exceeded expectations. That this insulated, vacuum-sealed cup has a straw was a real selling point for me. I’ve used an insulated bottle for years, and though I hate to admit it, I was often too lazy to remove the cap to drink from it. So I wasn’t drinking nearly as much as I should have been. Since switching, I like to think I’ve become my most hydrated self. The tumbler comes with two straws and a flip-top lid as well, so I can sip coffee and other hot drinks from it too. You can get it in either 24 or 28 ounces—both of which fit into your standard cup holder which is uncommon for that volume. On top of it all, the tumbler fits just about any aesthetic thanks to its many color options.

La Roche-Posay 30 SPF Moisturizer

La Roche-Posay SPF Moisturizer

$19.99

My complexion is admittedly pale. And, therefore, I’m always the first to burn. The fact that I’m a runner only means it’s more important for me to be wearing sunscreen every day. Unfortunately, every SPF moisturizer I had ever tried left me feeling greasy, oily, and smelling like a day at the beach (and not in a good way), even in the middle of winter. So when I heard of the La Roche-Posay moisturizer, I figured I had to try it. To start, it’s only $20 and comes in a large bottle. The product is silky and moisturizing, and while it does have a sunscreen scent, it isn’t overwhelming. It doesn’t come off with sweat as I run, and it even serves as a good base for makeup if you aren’t a fan of primer. Best of all it, works great on my combo skin leaving me soft, dewy, and baby-faced.

The Gym People Workout Tank

THE GYM PEOPLE

$21.99

When I heard that this top was a dupe for the coveted Lululemon Align workout crop (and cost less than half as much), I was intrigued. While I normally don’t have a whole lot of confidence in a random Amazon brand, the thousands of customer reviews and TikTok praises helped me pull the trigger. I ordered the dusty blue color in a medium, and it fits nearly perfectly. I usually float between a small and a medium, but if you’re unsure, size up. The buttery soft, moisture-wicking fabric feels way more expensive than it is, and the seaming and design is almost identical to the Align. Since I have a smaller chest, I didn’t personally have any issues with this top. However, the built-in bra isn’t particularly supportive, so it works better for low-impact exercise like yoga. That said, I adore it and have already ordered another.

Things I like

Elite Gourmet HyperChiller Iced Coffee Maker

HyperChiller Iced Coffee Maker
Elite Gourmet

$26.99

Like many runners, I’m a coffee fiend. And since I’m from the East Coast, I’m also particular to iced coffee—in every season. But since frequenting my local coffee establishments (or buying pre-made from the grocery store) can get pricey, I’m always looking for a way to make cafe-quality iced coffee at home. Enter the HyperChiller. No longer do I have to wait for coffee to cool, or ruin it in my haste by watering it down with ice. This device is simple, effective, and requires no electricity. It has three chambers, and the user fills the inner and outermost with water and then places it in the freezer. You then pour hot coffee into the middle chamber, allowing it to cool in a matter of minutes without getting watered down. While this works, and the process has become a staple of my routine, I have to say that it didn’t cool quite as quickly as I was hoping, taking about up to 10 minutes depending on how cold I want it. This is a great option if you are looking for a cheap and effective way to make iced coffee instead of watering it down, or investing in a pricey iced coffee machine which can cost upwards of $50.

TheraBreath Mouthwash

It’s not common to see people taking the time to make videos raving about a mouthwash, and I can attest that this one from TheraBreath lives up to the hype. TheraBreath claims to give you fresh breath for 24 hours and is gluten free, kosher, and vegan. Though all are some variation of mint, there are a number of flavors to choose from, and different formulas help with everything from dry mouth to sensitive gums. Since I was never a fan of mouthwash in the past or the burning sensation it left me with, I assumed that this would be the same. I was pleasantly surprised however, that TheraBreath’s felt smooth and fresh without leaving my mouth dry. As for the 24-hour fresh breath, I can’t speak for how other people perceived me, but I felt cleaner, with no burning desire to brush even after drinking coffee.

Natural Vitality Calm Magnesium Citrate Supplement

Calm Magnesium Supplement

Magnesium can do a lot for your body, and it’s particularly great for runners. Its benefits have been linked to increased running performance, and it can help reduce inflammation and prevent muscle cramps. Studies have shown that it can also help to improve sleep quality, which is vital to recovery. I personally purchased this supplement because I had read that it can help combat stress and anxiety. And while there is the possibility that it’s a placebo effect, it seems to be working. I prepare mine in hot water with lemon, and within an hour, I begin to feel myself de-stress. While there are a few different flavor options, I tried the raspberry lemon. It has a pleasant taste to it and is slightly sweet—I like to add the lemon to give it a bit of extra zing. And for the ladies, I also discovered that it doesn’t just reduce cramping in the legs, but everywhere, and can be a great companion to your usual monthly painkillers.

Something I Regret

Mario Bedescu Drying Lotion

While the pandemic has certainly thrown a lot of curveballs our way this past year, the one that has been most consistent (for me, anyway) is pesky “mascne”—or mask acne. Since I have been blessed with pretty clear skin for most of my life, I found that dealing with consistent breakouts was a completely new issue for me, and I had no idea how to tackle it, so i turned to the popular Mario Bedescu drying lotion. While I may be in the minority, I am not a fan. First of all, it smells awful. As it dried, I found myself trying to breath as infrequently as possible to avoid the pungent odor. And while I was willing to put up with it if it worked, I found that when I woke up in the morning, my face was not magically clear like fellow reviewers claimed it would be. Instead, it left me with a splotch of hyper-pigmentation and flaky dry skin around the acne, seemingly without any improvement in the acne itself. While I certainly will not be purchasing this again, my frustration with it did lead me to a new staple product—Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant, which has since cleared my skin.
