Many baby and kids skin and body care products contain at least trace amounts of synthetic and artificial ingredients, including chemical preservatives, artificial fragrances, artificial colorants, and foaming agents.  In addition, not every ingredient is clearly safe or toxic – the jury is still out on many ingredients, including certain natural ones (especially as there is not one uniform natural certification).  However, lucky for us, there is now an abundance of natural and organic baby and kids care products that are free of all or most nasties and companies that provide real, healthy baby care products. Although conventional baby care companies are jumping on the band wagon, why not learn what small companies or dedicated natural skin care companies offer?  The list below is not comprehensive and will be updated periodically.

And please remember, whenever you see a new brand at a store proclaiming to be all natural or organic (without the certification), please check the labels!  In fact, always check labels. You are your own best source of information – stay educated and stay on top of it.

Avishi Organics
http://www.avishiorganics.com
Avishi Organics was founded and is run by a mom who, during her first pregnancy, was dissatisfied with the therapeutic benefits offered by other natural and organic skin care products developed for pregnant women and new moms and their newborns.  Her company offers just two products, both of which target sensitive skin and its conditions during pregnancy in moms to be and in newborns. The Intensive Baby Balm is USDA certified and developed to soothe, restore, and deeply nourish severely dry, extremely sensitive, and/or irritated skin.  The star ingredients are coconut oil (fights eczema, dermatitis, skin allergies and inflammation), neem oil (fights viral, bacterial, fungal skin conditions), and plantain (relieves inflammation).  The remaining ingredients (castor oil, beeswax, olive oil, St. John’s Worth, calendula, lavender oil, and tocopherol) are also derived from nature and are not supplemented with additives.  The stretch mark oil (as the baby balm, the company’s other product) has no parabens, sulfates, petroleum or derivatives, mineral oil or derivatives, fragrances, colors, animal ingredients, GMOs or other chemicals – after all, Avishi means “from nature.”

Babo Botanicals
http://www.babobotanicals.com
Babo Botanical’s skin care collection is made entirely on a certified organic farm in upstate New York. The collection offers 100% natural and organic shampoos and washes, bubble bath, conditioner, lotions, and bunny-shaped soaps, as well as a sunblock stick offering broad spectrum protection with mineral blockers. The line is completely free of artificial ingredients and the scents (some of which are a bit on the heavy side) are natural in origin as well.  In addition, there is a fragrance free line as well, which is super for those allergic to all scents.

BabySpa
http://www.babyspausa.com
BabySpa makes only baby and toddler care products with two distinct lines of products addressing the special needs of each age group. The company’s products are free of toxic and questionable ingredients (thus, no BPA, petrochemicals, parabens, phthalates, SLS etc) and instead include ethnobotanicals- songa, kizis, and kendi that are native to certain geographic areas where they have been used by the indigeous population. The product range for baby and toddler products are vast – from shampoo to body wash and from massage oil to face cream, as well as a good selection of gift sets.  You are likely to find whatever you need for your little one.

Badger Balm
http://www.badgerbalm.com
Although, in my view, Badger Balm’s star products are its amazing sunscreen and repellent products, the company has a relatively small but very good, clean selection of baby skin care product such as zinc oxide based diaper rash cream, baby oil, baby balm, and baby soap.  All products are 100% natural and certified organic.

Beautycounter
http://www.beautycounter.com
Beautycounter is a relatively new company that updated an existing business model and made it much better – as it has consultants with whom you can place an order if you like, it reminds me of Avon in a way, but much better as the ingredients are clean. In fact, the company banned 1,500 ingredients from its products (BHT, BHA, parabens, and so on). The product line is extensive and includes skincare items, make-up, a bath and body, as well as a line of baby care and kids care products. The baby care products include baby wash, baby oil, and baby balm, while the extensive kids line has shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lip balm, and mineral sunscreen products. You can place an order on the company web site or work with a consultant who can assist you.
